To stimulate growth, you need to apply progressive overload, train through a full range of motion, and vary both angles and rep ranges. One key best practice is to train both major calf muscles: the gastrocnemius (the outer, visible portion) and the soleus (the deeper, endurance-focused muscle). The gastrocnemius is best activated with straight-leg calf raises, while the soleus is targeted more with bent-knee calf raises (like seated calf raises). Including both variations in your routine ensures balanced development. Calves respond well to higher training frequency—you can train them 2–4 times per week, depending on your recovery and volume. Use a mix of moderate to high reps (10–20+), and don’t be afraid to push to failure occasionally to truly challenge the muscles. Ensure every rep includes a full stretch at the bottom and a hard squeeze at the top, avoiding fast or shallow bouncing. Also, consider tempo work, pausing in the stretched position to increase time under tension. Like any muscle group, track your progress, apply overload over time, and stay consistent for the best results.
